Don’t Judge Me Mondays: Purple Cow

/ Uncategorized

When I was in elementary school I went to a friend’s house before and after school until I was old enough to be at home by myself.  My friend’s mom, Shirley, would occasionally make a drink called a Purple Cow for her kids, which was grape juice and milk mixed together. It sounded disgusting to me, but Shirley offered to make me one so I thought I might as well try it.  It was so tasty!  It had that great grape flavor from the juice, but the milk made it creamy.  Sometimes I still think about that drink and wonder if my adult taste buds would like it as much.  It turns out, it still holds up so I started plotting ways to make it into a cocktail.  I recently re-organized our liquor so that I could see it all and have been determined to use more of what we have before buying anything else.  I noticed we had vanilla vodka for some reason so I decided to add that to the mix and we had a winner!

Let’s get our purple on!

You’ll start by filling two small 8-ounce jars or cocktail glasses with ice.  You want this drink really cold or it will start to curdle (blech!).  In a larger jar or pitcher pour the milk and grape juice and give it a stir.

My favorite color happens to be purple so this drink has the added bonus of being a lovely lavender shade. 🙂  Now you’ll add the vanilla vodka and give it a final stir.

Isn’t that a pretty color!

The final step is evenly dividing the drink between the two glasses. Serve immediately.

Cheers!

Do you have foods/drinks like that from your childhood you’ve recently tried again?  What other things have stood the test of time?
