Flavor of the Month summary: Tomatoes
Well, another Flavor of the Month has concluded and we’re not into fall. Tomatoes fresh from the garden is always one of the highlights of the summer for me and this year was no exception. I had a blast sharing a bunch of tomato recipes with you. Here’s a few things we learned:
- Green tomatoes have their own usefulness with their tart taste and sturdy texture
- Tomatoes and sugar are a match made in heaven. I was excited to find some sweet applications for tomatoes! When they are cooked down, tomatoes get even sweeter and sugar added created a lovely syrup.
- Tomatoes can be roasted and stuffed!
Pearl Couscous & Tomato Salad – I like this salad because it has tomato flavor two ways: fresh and sun-dried, both adding something interesting. This salad is a sophisticated version of a pasta salad and is great for lunches!
Tomato Balsamic Jam – We keep finding more and more ways to use this jam. It’s sticky and sweet with a little zip from the balsamic vinegar. It’s great on BLTs, burgers and hot dogs, but also on toast or pancakes. I bet it would be an interesting dip for something fried like egg rolls.
Cheeto-crusted Fried Green Tomatoes – I’ll admit, I wasn’t sure how these would turn out but they are amazing! The Cheetos add a cheesy crunch to the classic fried green tomatoes. I’ll be making another big batch of these soon I’m sure to use up all of my green tomatoes!
Caprese Poutine – I love this Poutine because it is a hearty vegetarian dish to share. The tomatoes are made into a savory gravy that is lovely over French fries. It will be a hit at your next party!
Smoky Maria – Who knew green tomato juice could be so tasty! This cocktail is my own sweet, tart and smoky take on the Bloody Mary.
Tomato Upside Down Cake – I got some strange looks when I said I was serving this, but that went away when my friends tasted it. Moist cake has a caramel-y topping that is sticky but still tastes of tomato. If you only try one thing on this list, I recommend this one, it’s something different and you deserve an adventure.
Stuffed Tomatoes- Italian sausage is added to rice and cheese to stuff fresh tomatoes. The rice softens and turns into something like risotto for a really tasty treat. The best part is that it’s a whole meal on its own with a veggie, starch and protein all in one!
