Holiday Break

/ Uncategorized

Today I’m doing something different.  I thought I’d spend some time on something more personal and hope you’ll indulge me. 🙂

Every year I get about a week off around the holidays and it’s a nice break from the hustle and bustle of work. I always get caught in the same thing though….I make a huge list of things to get done.  They are not normally fun tasks, but things I think will set me up for success down the road (sorting our files to get ready for taxes, for example).

Every year I make a list and every year I end up exhausted at the end of the week and discouraged because I didn’t complete it.  Whenever I lament about not being organized or that “I should’ve gotten more done” my husband reminds me that no human being would’ve been able to complete the dozens of things I had listed.  Not to mention the fact that I’m doing it all while anchored by  a chronic disease!  And you know what, he’s right.  I deserve to enjoy the vacation time I get, and so do you! This year I’ve decided I am going to take a REAL break.  I’m going to make a SMALL list of things and remind myself that if I am more relaxed by the end of the break, it has been a success.  Having Lupus has made me more in tune with my body, but sometimes I still ignore it when it tells me to SLOW DOWN.  This year I know I need the rest and I not going to feel guilty about taking it.

I am guessing you want to know what’s on my list.  It’s simple:

  1. Work on this blog– this is by far the most fun thing on the list.  I’m going to take this week to work on more posts that I can pepper in when I’m lacking inspiration down the road.  I hate feeling rushed when I write a post and would like to allow myself a more than 12-hour buffer.  I also feel like I owe that to you guys who are nice enough to stop by and read what I have to say (not to mention, I’m sure my husband would like more than a few hours notice to edit a post).  Stay tuned for updates to the look of By the Pounds also in the next few months! I also plan to test a recipe or two.
  2. Work on my resume– While this one isn’t fun, it’s a necessary evil.  I keep putting it off and it would do me good to spend a few uninterrupted hours updating it.
  3. Re-organize the kitchen– You guys know how much I’m into organization, but our kitchen is a bit of a disaster right now, between the blog and the holidays it’s ben hard to keep up. My husband and I are going to spend some time re-evaluating- getting rid of things we don’t use, maybe moving things around for better functionality and tackling our walk-in pantry.  We are so lucky to have this pantry but we need to make it easier to use.  I have started just throwing things in there, rather than putting them where they belong which means we end up with crap everywhere (see photo below).  I hope to update you on our progress here or through Twitter and Instagram.

What a mess!

When I am not working on the list, you will most likely find me sleeping, cooking, coloring, painting my nails, or reading- all things I love to do to relax.

Are you guilty of the impossible to do list?  How do you unwind?  Let me know in the comments!
