Don’t Judge Me Mondays: Harvest Toddy

Well, the rainy season officially started this weekend in the Pacific Northwest.  This weather just makes me want to hunker down on the couch under a blanket, with a mug of something hot in my hands.  After the Mezcal Hot Cocoa from last week, I wanted something lighter.  My first thought was a hot toddy.  I headed in that direction with my own spin (as I often do) by using Scotch as the whisky (whiskey with an e for its American and Irish counterpart) component along with the addition vanilla and bitters to round out the flavor.

This drink is fairly simple, so I thought it was important I used a scotch that works well with the citrus.  img_5363I asked my friend Betsy from the Scotchy Scotch Scotchcast for some recommendations.   She suggested I use the Highland Park 12, the Balvenie Double Wood 12 or the Speyside blended scotch from Trader Joe’s.  I chose the Balvenie because it’s the one I tasted when I was their guest (brings back good memories!).

Let’s get to the toddy!

Start by pouring the boiling water in your favorite fall mug (I’ll be honest, I also wanted to share a hot drink so I could use this fun owl mugs I just got!). Make sure to measure the water once it’s boiled.  Add the honey, OJ and vanilla extract and stir until the honey dissolves.  Now stir in the scotch and bitters and enjoy!

Ingredients

  • 6 ounces boiling water
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • juice of half an orange, about 2 teaspoons
  • 1 ounce scotch
  • splash of vanilla extract
  • dash of bitters

Instructions

  1. Start by pouring the boiling water in a mug. Make sure to measure the water once it's boiled.
  2. Add the honey, OJ and vanilla extract and stir until the honey dissolves.
  3. Stir in the scotch and bitters.
