Kirk & Sweeney 12-year Rum

/ Uncategorized

Derek’s favorite spirit is Rum. While he likes the occasional glass of Scotch, Rum is his go-to when he wants a glass of something neat, rather than mixed into a cocktail.  A few Christmases ago, I bought him a nice bottle of rum and when he finished that we got a bottle of this Kirk & Sweeney 12-year rum.  It’s made in the Dominican Republic with sugar cane and aged in oak barrels for 12 years. It was actually available at our local grocery store so you should’n’t have any trouble finding it.  It comes in a beautiful bottle with a thick glass base.  I already have my eye on it to use as a vase when we finish the rum. 😉

The aroma of the rum is vanilla with woodsy undertones. It also has a lovely rich amber color.  The taste reminds me of honey in a couple of ways.  It has the flavor of honey and has a thick syrupy consistency that coats my mouth, which also reminds me of honey.

This rum is fairly reasonably priced at under $40 for a bottle, but I still wouldn’t use it in cocktails.  I think this would be a good starter rum to try or as a gift.  Kirk & Sweeney also makes an 18-year and a 23-year rum, which we’ll have to try.

If you have a favorite rum, I’d love to hear about it!
