Satsuma Lime Julius

/ Uncategorized

Every December my dad I go shopping for my mom’s Christmas presents.  It’s been our tradition since I was old enough to remember.  Even though my dad could easily go by himself and I have already done my Christmas shopping it’s a fun excuse for us to have some father-daughter time.  We usually go out for lunch or dinner and my dad tells everyone we encounter that he’s got his “trusted shopping buddy” with him.  🙂  This year at the mall we were both talking about how much the mall has changed over the years.  The food court used to be this dark tiny part of the mall in all brown tones and now it’s a huge section of the mall that’s full of natural light.  Some things have stayed the same though.  One of those constants is, and probably always will be, an Orange Julius. If you’re not familiar, Orange Julius sells hot dogs and other snacks but is best known for the drink that is its namesake.  The Orange Julius is a a creamy, slightly slushy, sweet drink that is in a class all its own.  I think there are other flavors, but for me the plain orange will always be the best.  After being at the mall with my dad, I started craving this drink and decided I’d try making my own at home.  I changed it up a bit by using Satsumas for a more full flavored orange-y tang and added some lime for tartness. It’s delicious!

So let’s get to it!

Start by filling your blender with the milk, orange and lime juices, and ice.  If you don’t have satsumas navel oranges will work, it just won’t have that same zip.

Now blend until it’s smooth.  I like mine fairly thin, but if you want a thicker drink you can add more ice. Taste it for sweetness and add the sugar if you like.

Pour in a glass and enjoy!  This drink is great as a light breakfast on the go or to wash down your waffles.  It’s also great for an afternoon snack.  The milk and juices can separate, so this isn’t a beverage to dilly dally drinking. 😉

Stay tuned this month for more citrus recipes.  It turns out this ingredient was a wise choice, I feel like everyone could use the extra vitamin C.  Stay healthy guys!
