Everything Bagel Seasoning

/ Uncategorized

In our last book club meeting, the conversation veered towards food after we finished discussing the book.  The girls were telling me about an ingenious product Trader Joe’s now carries, it’s everything bagel seasoning.  This seemed like a product that could have all kinds of uses, so I started thinking about making my own to have on hand.

This seasoning is easy to make and will definitely remind you of that savory, crunchy, and oniony flavor of an everything bagel.  I found a nifty shaker top for a mason jar, which is perfect for this.  I can make a big batch and keep it in the jar at the ready to shake on anything and everything,

Let’s get seasoning!

This recipe is basically mixing spices together, like I said it’s super easy.  In a bowl or jar, add the sesame seeds, poppy seeds, garlic salt and onion flakes.  I recommend getting all of this in the bulk spice section your local grocery store, it’s much cheaper than buying jars.  You may have noticed I didn’t include caraway seeds.  I’ve seen some everything bagels with this see on them, but I just can’t stand the flavor.  If you like rye and want caraway seed in your seasoning you can substitute the sesame or poppy seeds for it or just add the same amount.

Mix all the spices together in the bowl or shake in a jar.  Store in a covered container. There you go, you now have your season.  So what can you do with it?

So far we’ve tried it on several things that have been really tasty:

  • sprinkled on avocado toast
  • encrusted a pork tenderloin
  • mixed in popcorn

Other things I can’t wait to try it on:

  • cheesy bread
  • in creamy polenta or mashed potatoes
  • a topping for biscuits
  • added to pie crust for a quiche

The possibilities are endless for this seasoning!  I’d love to hear how you plan to use it.
