Don’t Judge Me Mondays: The Porch Swing

/ Uncategorized

Well, somehow we’re almost to the end of April, so today will be the last Passionfruit-themed Don’t Judge Me Mondays (for awhile anyway?).

When I was a teenager I had an obsession with porches.  I don’t know how or why it came about, but I loved the idea of sitting on a porch on a lazy warm day and would daydream about having a house with a large wraparound porch when I was an adult.  My parents had a large deck at their house, but somehow it wasn’t the same to me? I think I even had a coffee table book with glossy pictures of porches and got a porch-themed calendar at least one year.  Did I mention I was obsessed?

Well fast forward to being an adult and while my life is more than I could ever have hoped for in so many ways, teenage Rachel might be disappointed at the lack of a porch in my life.  😉  You might be wondering where I’m going with all this.  Well the first time I made this cocktail, I took a sip and just felt like I should be drinking it on a porch in warm weather, gazing at a large field and possibly with a big hat on.  It’s just that kind of drink.  It’s cold, easy to drink with the combination of rum and passionfruit and just reminds me of the south with the addition of brown sugar. It isn’t too fussy, which is how I imagine a cocktail drank on the porch should be.  There may already be cocktail with the name Porch Swing out there, but this is my own dream of what I would drink out on the porch.

Ok, to the porch!

You’ll start by mixing the passionfruit puree and brown sugar together in a small bowl to dissolve the brown sugar.

Then if you’re going to rim your mason jar(s) with brown sugar, you’ll do that now.  This recipe makes one large cocktail (pint mason jar) or 2 smaller (h  Start by squeezing the rim of your jars with lime and then dip them in brown sugar on a small plate.

Now gently fill your jars with ice, so you don’t disturb the sugar on the rim.  Divide the sugar and passionfruit mixture between the glasses.

Then pour in the rum and squeeze in the juice of a lime quarter.  Top off with sparkling water and stir.

Garnish with a lime wedge.

Enjoy on the porch if you have one (teenage Rachel is so jealous!).
