Don’t Judge Me Mondays: Indian Wells Cab
I discovered that March is Washington Wine Month! I know I’ve mentioned how lucky we are to live in an area with such a great wine scene. Within 5 miles of our house, there are at least 50 wineries with tasting rooms or headquarters. One of the largest ones is Chateau Ste. Michelle. it’s a beautiful winery that holds concerts in the summer and has regular wine tastings and tours. If you’re ever in Woodinville it’s worth checking out. I went to a concert there a few years ago and it was fabulous. As the sun was setting, there were hot air balloons flying in the distance and there was a certain magic in the air.
Chateau Ste. Michelle makes great wines but what I especially love about it is that this winery makes several wines that are very reasonably priced. If I am going to a dinner party or giving wine as a gift, Chateau Ste. Michelle is one of my go-tos. The winery has a great Riesling for about $7 a bottle and many other varietals. The one I’m going to tell you about today is the 2014 Indian Wells Cabernet Sauvignon. I found it for $10 at Costco and should be fairly easy to find on the west coast.
I love this wine for its versatility. It is a great red to drink on its own but also pairs well with several foods. I even had a glass with roasted chicken the other night and it was delicious! It works with dark chocolate and would be a great choice to pair with a juicy burger. Even though it’s a Cabernet, the flavor is not overwhelming. Some Cabs are so bold you feel like you’re being slapped in the face when you take a sip.
The Indian Wells has a lush fruity finish and I got a coffee aftertaste when I drank it. It’s not too dry and is fairly light bodied (especially fora Cab!). In that respect, it actually reminded me a little of some Pinot Noirs. I’ve also had the 2013 vintage and found it to be just as tasty.
