Don’t Judge Me Mondays: The Wake Up Call

/ Uncategorized

A lot of people ask me where I get inspiration for my recipes.  One source is food related podcasts. I was recently listening to one of my favorites, Spilled Milk,  one of the drinks they discussed caught my ear.  It was a drink made of espresso and tonic water.  I’d never heard of it before, but knew right away that I wanted to find a way to make it into a cocktail!  I’ve made mine with seltzer water so it would be easier to control the sweetness and it’s quite tasty! I also like this drink because it’s perfect for this weird purgatory weather period we’re in here in the Pacific Northwest, where fall has begun but things still feel a little summery.  It’s iced for the summer part, but has the sense of warmth from the coffee, if that makes sense.

I also like this drink because it’s something new to add to your brunch cocktail repertoire.  We all know how much I love bubbly, but it’s nice to have another option (and I just can’t handle Bloody Marys). 🙂

Let’s get to the drink already!

You’ll start by mixing the espresso powder with the boiling water.  If you have a machine, you should totally use a shot of espresso.  We don’t so I used the powder and it’s still delicious.  Let it cool to room temperature.

Fill a tall and skinny cocktail glass with ice and pour in the espresso.  Next add the Kahlua.  I chose Kahlua for this drink to intensify the coffee flavor and also add some sweetness.  It really works!  Now you’ll top the drink off with seltzer water and stir.

Enjoy!
