Don’t Judge Me Mondays: Palomas

/ Uncategorized

The first time I had a Paloma was in Austin, Texas.  My husband I were there on vacation and I ordered one at a local Mexican place.  It was so delicious and refreshing!  I love grapefruit and Tequila so it was right up my alley.  I’ve created my own version that’s a little bit lighter.

In this version I use Fresca, which is a light grapefruit-flavored soda and it works wonderfully!  Let’s make our Palomas!

For this cocktail, I recommend wide-mouthed glasses that hold at least 8 ounces. First we are going to rim the glasses with sugar.  It adds a nice sparkle and also is a nice taste of sweetness at the start of a sip.  Put the sugar on a small plate, saucer or shallow bowl.  You want something that is relatively flat so that the whole rim will touch the surface.

For a garnish, peel 2 pieces of zest off the lime with vegetable peeler.  Now cut the lime into 4 wedges. Take one of the lime wedges and rub it around the rim of a glass to get lime juice on it.  Do the same thing on the other glass.  This will help the sugar adhere.

Put the first glass upside down in your dish of sugar and twist.  The sugar stick to the rim.  Now tip the glass over in the dish so that you can get a thick coating of sugar on the rim.  Do the second glass and you’re done!

Now fill the glasses with ice.  The first time I made these, I started filling the glasses with ice before doing the sugar rim (whoops!).

Divide half of the Fresca between the two glasses.  Give each one a squirt from the 2 remaining lime wedges.  Add the Tequila to each glass.  I would recommend Blanco Tequila (the least aged type) for this recipe.  The flavor goes well with grapefruit flavor and it will keep the cocktail a nice clear-ish color.

Top with the rest of the Fresca and stir.  Put in your lime zest garnish.

Enjoy!
