Grown-up Shirley Temples
It turns out tomorrow is Shirley Temple’s birthday- she would have been 88. In honor of that, I decided to do a post on Shirley Temple the drink! As most of you probably know, a Shirley Temple is lemon-lime soda (random question: do you say soda or pop?) mixed with grenadine. When I was a kid, I remember going out to dinner with my parents getting a Shirley Temple every once in awhile if I was good. The Mexican restaurant we went to served them in a glass shaped like a boot and I loved it!
I’ve decided to make grown-up Shirley Temples (aka Shirley Temple cocktails!). I’ve made a couple of different versions- try them both and let me know which is your favorite.
The “Classic”
This is the grown-up version of the original drink. Fill your favorite glass with ice. Add 6 ounces of lemon-lime soda, vodka and grenadine. You can also use the juice from the Maraschino cherries, which is essentially the same thing as grenadine (both grenadine and maraschino cherries can be found in the cocktail/soda aisle of your local grocery store). Stir until the grenadine is dispersed. Add a maraschino cherry and straw if you really want to treat yourself!
The Fancy
This version uses Kirsch, which is a cherry liqueur. I bought it for the first time when I made a Black Forest cake for my husband’s birthday and discovered it’s delicious!
It can be a little hard to find, but worth it in my humble opinion.
I was able to find it at Whole Foods for about $30.
Fill a nice cocktail glass (I found these at Cost Plus for just $4!) with ice. Add 7 ounces of lemon-lime soda and the Kirsch. Stir to combine. The one downfall to this drink is that you don’t get the nice pink color. However, I got over that when I tasted it 😉
Let me know in the comments which one you tried and how you liked it! If you tried both, let us all know which you liked better.
Happy Friday!
